Spring sounds like

this place is a poem
of birdsong and car wheels
on winter-shattered tarmac

a sonnet of screech owl
trills and lawn mowers
fox barks and small
planes stutter-humming
through pine-tinted breeze

a lyric away
in the sycamore tree
a hive of tone-on-tone
sisters and brothers wait
in ever-moving patience
for their flower-food crusted
siblings to drone home

Begun during the 2020 pandemic, the “Defiant Joy” poem series focuses on shoring up our resilience through noticing moments of joy, wonder, awe and peace while keeping our feet firmly planted in reality.
