Scared? Do It Anyway.

There are times in life when you just know you need to do something, despite what everyone else thinks you should do. The last few months of 2013 was one of those times for me.

It seems like ‘the thing’ to do right now with an online business is to focus on some form of business coaching, as if that is the way to the golden carrot. I should start out by telling you that I’m a multi-passionate. If you’re not sure what that means, a multi-passionate is basically someone who has multiple interests; feels strongly enough about several that they feel the need to pursue those as a career.

For several years, I had been both a working artist and a business coach. I began coaching on the basics of business, and found that I had a particular interest in branding. Being a multi-passionate myself, I wanted to help other multi-passionates create a successful business that honored their multi-passionate drive, without the confines of having to “pick a niche” as so many business coaches will advise. So I shifted my focus from a general business coach to a multi-passionate brand coach.

Things were going really well. I had started to develop a serious following and was becoming known as an authority in my field. But as much as I loved working with my clients, something just didn’t feel right. I felt like my creative well was being sapped dry, and I couldn’t put my finger on the problem. So, I created all the content I currently had on my roster, which allowed me to give myself a month off to try & pinpoint the issue. In that time, I talked to a few friends who are also online business owners. As we talked, I began to see the problem & knew what needed to happen. But it wasn’t that simple. I couldn’t just do that!

Then, one of my fellow biz owners said, “Candace, you’re really stubborn when you want to be. Let’s be honest — you can probably do anything you want to if you want it badly enough. The question isn’t if you can do it, the question is why do you want to? Stop being stubborn; you already know what you need to do. You know who you are.”

I think I had known for awhile what I wanted — to focus on my art, writing, and other creative pursuits.

When I finally came to this decision, I didn’t share it immediately. I wanted to take the time to solidify the decision in my mind, and frankly, get up the nerve to do it. Most people were supportive. Some weren’t.

But I knew it’s what I needed to do.

Throughout the entire processes, I experienced a lot of internal & external struggle. I’ll admit it — I definitely had moments where I thought “I must be crazy. I’ve worked my ass off for this, and I’m not giving it up!” Like all of us, my business meant a lot to me, and letting that business go was like deciding to let go of a part of myself. There were also those who, while supportive, questioned my decision and couldn’t understand where I was coming from. I would often hear things like ‘You’re doing so well! Why would you give all that up?!’ ‘Most people would kill to have their business in the spot yours is right now.’ ‘Are you sure you’ve really thought this through?’

But when you know, you know.

Six months later, I look back and am so happy I listened to my intuition. My day consists of painting, writing, collaborating on projects, and connecting with great people.

My hope is that my story will inspire you to follow your heart, take that leap of faith. If there is something that you feel a strong pull to, if you feel you need to make a change, don’t be afraid — just do it. If you only get one thing from my story, make it this: You can be successful & have a thriving business doing what you love. It’s okay to be scared. Do it anyway.
