Putting me first

For as long as I can remember I have always put others first, before me.

A couple of years back when someone who was close to me was having a major crisis I put my family second. I pushed us to the point of emotional and physical breakdown so that we could help them, only to find later when it was all over…they didn’t stick around when things got tough friendship wise.

Even in my own business I will often put me last, looking after everyone else except me.

I was asked the other day what my resolution was going to be this year. I really do not do the whole resolution thing BUT…

2017 is about putting me first. I find that very hard to say…in fact, for me being selfish is one of the things that sets me off. But as I have come to realize, putting yourself first is not selfish. It has an effect that ripples through your whole life and all relationships. It makes you a better and stronger person.

Now do not get me wrong. I am not going to adopt a whole “I do not care about other people” attitude. But for me this year is about anchoring in, placing boundaries and not putting myself is a situation where I or my little tribe of 4 are being taken advantage of.

So here is the how part.  🙂

For me health has been an ongoing issue. I have finally found someone who is starting to get my meds right and can report that those ghastly menopause hormones (or as my son calls it “the elephant in the room”) are slowly by slowly taking a hike. This year it is about putting me first health wise. I am now in a place where I can get myself moving and am wanting to eat better.

Secondly, I am going to learn to stand on my own 2 feet. So many times last year people let me down. They would only do things if it served themselves rather than the greater good. This year, for me, is about placing boundaries. Being able to do things myself so that I am not counting on others as much. Now, don’t get me wrong, I have some pretty awesome people I do count on. And let me tell you my best mate is always the one that gets those teary calls and she is always there. But I guess what I am saying is, this year I am backing myself and learning to kick butt in terms of sorting things myself.

Let me say I will always be there for anyone who needs it, and no doubt still be in a role of PA to my kids. 🙂 But being busy and filled with family jobs is different than running yourself into the ground and being taken advantage of. That is what this year is about – standing my ground and not letting people take advantage of me and my giving, caring nature.

My question to all of you is “Are you going to put yourself first this year?” Because guess what???? It is time for you to enjoy life, for you to grab life for yourself and run with it!

Happy 2017 everyone. I hope this year is filled with beautiful moments filled with family and friends.
