Two small words have the power to get you unstuck: Not This.

In 2013, when I knew I needed to leave my job of almost 10 years, I could never have predicted what would come next. I did all of the usual things – interviewed for other jobs, networked, and even went to some grad school open houses. Thankfully, none of those thing worked out but the truth is that I didn’t know what I wanted. I did know “not this.” I knew what didn’t work about that job anymore, but I definitely didn’t have a nice & neat 10-step plan for my next move.

What I did have was “not this.”

Not this gave me the power and courage to take action.

Not this helped me realize that those jobs and grad school programs weren’t right for me.

Not this helped me fill out an application for a coach training program so quickly that I didn’t have time to talk myself out of it!

Not this helped me say yes to a step-down job that supported me as I built my business.

The power in these 2 small words is immense.
I see so many people not taking action because the full plan doesn’t exist yet, when what really true is that every step you take, changes the next one. If I had waited to have a perfectly designed plan for my next destination, I’d still be at that job – or worse, considering that company went out of business a few years after I left!

When you’re feeling stuck and think you don’t have any idea about what’s next, get clear on your “not this.” Trust that clarity. Let it guide you. That’s the only next step you need.
