Midnight

Midnight came and went without a sign of you
and by the time it was noon, I knew you weren’t coming
the rain began and the mark of you on my soul
burned as the thunder clapped and I never made it
out to the sun so we never could create the rainbow
I so longed to see out of our bond
I know I only sing wings that flutter by from time to time
with a splash of red and khaki coming by in streaks
I have to wonder if it’s you or
have we become so far away from each other that the howling
of the wind barely whispers our names now?
This must be the changing of a season and you are always
good for a season. Every year, year after year.
So is that a lifetime?
Do you think we could bring ourselves to the present
and still find what is possibly an ‘us’?
Or am I just stuck waiting for midnight again?
And the thing is, you know I will wait. Because I always do.
Because you insist. Year after year.
