Matt Kurtz Kindness Award Winner Announcement

Neel Sood, (Bridgewater, NJ) is a 9-year-old who created the Hearts of Kindness Project to spread kindness and positivity throughout Hamilton Primary School where he is a 4th grader. He discovered the idea on the internet and that ignited his mission to spread kindness to reach the hearts of his fellow students and remind each of them how amazing they are.

“Neel constructed over 470 hanging paper hearts in different colors each with a positive message card attached. Each message card had one of 12 positive messages attached to it. Neel researched the messages on the internet and created some of them himself. Some messages were “It’s cool to be kind,” “Kindness spreads sunshine to others” and “If you think someone could use a friend, be one.”

The back of each message card said “Write your own superpower on your heart.” The hearts were meant to empower students and to remind each student of how amazing they are. Every student in Hamilton School received a heart of kindness. The heart could be hung on their backpack, in their cubby, or anywhere at home to serve as a reminder to each student of their unique abilities and to give them a message of kindness to read whenever they may need one.

The project was very well received and students were excited to receive the hearts. Kindness and goodwill blossomed throughout Hamilton School and Neel’s project was covered in an article on his school’s website and in the local newspaper.

Neel spent numerous hours planning and constructing the hearts. He used his birthday money to purchase all the supplies. His project had a tremendous impact and made so many students feel good and feel seen.

Neel isn’t stopping here. He was so happy with the success of his Hearts of Kindness project that he is planning to visit residents of a local nursing home and give each of them a heart of kindness which they can hang in their room. When he’s done there, he plans to expand the “Hearts of Kindness Project” to other groups in his community so that he can spread kindness to as many people as he can. He also hopes that others will bring the Hearts of Kindness Project to their schools and communities, letting the kindness ripple out and touch more and more people.

Neel shows us that age is not a barrier to spreading kindness to others. A good reminder to all of us, you’re never too young (or old) to pursue your dreams and make a difference in the world.
