Listen To Your Own Rhythm

When I started my own business a year ago I was so happy and excited to have finally made that Big Leap that I worked all the time. And when I wasn’t working I was talking about my work. I was buzzing with energy and received so much positive feedback from the people who were supporting me. And as I work online most of the time the notion of time and space is very blurry. Connecting with people all over the world is wonderful but it also means that someone is always up and chatting on Facebook and there are no clear boundaries between working hours and the rest of our lives.

My first year in business was like a Great Adventure and I said yes to everything and everyone who seemed like good fun. I’m very happy I did that but after about 8 months of business I suddenly got really tired and lost my motivation to create and connect with others. At first I felt guilty and spent lots of time connected anyway but slowly it dawned on me that I needed a break. I needed to get in touch with my own inner rhythm and listen to it.

I had spent months working all day and until very late at night. Being a morning person this was not my natural rhythm at all. But instead of adapting my business to my own needs I had done it the other way around. Although I was in reality free to choose my own hours I kept going until I was too tired to move.

If you are entrepreneur you probably know exactly what I mean. Having your own business and doing what you love also means that there are no clear boundaries between work and play. Now that I have tried the old way and realised it’s not working. At least not for me – and probably not in the long run for anyone – I have made some big changes to how I work.

If you are feeling tired and unmotivated by the work you love I invite you to try a few of the things that have worked for me to reconnect with your rhythm.

1. Get enough sleep. Sleep is so important for our wellbeing and no matter how hard you try, there is no way to get around this one. So go to bed early and sleep in whenever you can. And if you have small kids and can’t do any of that, take naps. Even just an hour lying down and relaxing can do wonders for a tired mind.

2. Switch off your computer. Yes, you can do it. Get away from that screen and don’t replace it with something similar like an ipad or the TV. Instead read a book or listen to music. Your body and soul will thank you.

3. Go outside. Go for a walk or a run and move your body. And if you’re really tired, sit or lie down on the grass and just breathe. Our bodies were not made to spend this much time inside with artificial light. They were made for movement and for being connected with nature.

4. Close your eyes and listen to your inner voice. Whether you meditate, do yoga or just sit down and focus on how you are feeling inside doesn’t matter. What matters is that you close off your outer world for a moment and pay attention to what is happening inside you. Your heart and soul are communicating with you all the time. Listen.

There are so many ways you can get out of your head and into your body again. Just choose one that feels right to you. And the more you do it the more important it will become to you. As an entrepreneur your most important asset is you. In order to be happy and share your gifts with the world you need to take care of yourself first.

Take the time you need every day to check in with your body and soul and ask yourself what you need. And listen. Make taking care of your needs a priority in your life and both you and your business will soar. When you get enough rest, creative time, movement and gorgeous food you can be the very best version of who you are. I have noticed how much more work I get done – in much less time – and how many more amazing clients I attract when I feel great inside and out.

Other people can feel if you are buzzing from an adrenaline rush or if you are truly nourished by spirit when they interact with you. This is like a magic button you turn on and things start falling into place.

I wish you a balanced life full of exciting projects and a healthy lifestyle to help you step into who you truly are. You are a Beautiful Soul and you were born with precious gifts. You have everything you need inside you. All you need to do is listen. What is your inner voice telling you? Is your body bursting with creativity or is it longing for rest? Give yourself what you truly need and your well will always be filled.
