Letting Go, Part 5

Post by Heather Shafer for the Kind Kindred series.

Hello Wonderful Souls!

In the letting go series we have covered some seemingly simple yet very powerful prompts. It’s too easy at the end of something like this (a series, a class etc.) to just sort of move on and forget it. However, letting go is something I think that we are best served continuing to practice again and again. As we release we often bring up or reveal other layers of “stuff” that needs to be released and so on.

Let’s look at a few ways you can keep the practice of letting go happening in your life.

  1. Do a 5-10 minute de-clutter of 1 spot at least once a week (more often is awesome too!). Set a timer for 5 minutes and de-clutter 1 spot, take one book that feels like a “should” off of the shelf and into the donation pile etc.
  2. Brain dump – all the stuff that is in your mind can feel overwhelming. A way to let go of that feeling can sometimes be as simple as starting with a brain dump list. (List it all out; no order, priority or worry if it makes no senseā€¦just let it out!)
  3. Ask yourself, what am I holding onto right now that is blocking me? Maybe it’s an old story, maybe it’s too much stuff in your closet. Start with asking yourself, and if possible let it go once you have identified what “it” is!
  4. Write down the stuff that you feel you are still holding onto and rip the piece of paper into bits, cover it up with something positive, burn it (the list – not the stuff! – SAFELY of course). Create a way or ritual that feels like a release to you for those things.
  5. Identify even 1 small thing that you want more of in your life and do what you can to make it happen. I would encourage you to start with something smaller just to build up the confidence here. What does this have to do with letting go? The more we fill our lives with what fills us, the less room (and tolerance) we have for that stuff that is just OK or drains us.

Most of all, be fiercely gentle with yourself in this process.
