Let’s Talk Wellness

We like to throw around the word wellness a lot. It generally involves ads with young, skinny women or male doctors telling us how we can lose weight.

In support of this, I saw a Facebook ad the other day where a celebrity was with her doctor as he congratulated her because she had NO fat. She hugged her doctor, her doctor hugged her. She was jumping up and down because she had no fat. I was appalled, not only because I liked this actress, but because here we go again… another woman and her male doctor telling women that we should have no fat.

I would like to offer another view on wellness. Wellness is working with your body and your brain to feel your optimal best. There’s one question that I like to ask, and it is “If your weight could not change for the rest of your life, and you were only eating for your emotional well-being, how would you eat?” It’s easy to initially think that you would eat all junk food all the time. You would want to eat chocolate cake every day… oh wait, maybe that’s just me! The reality is that we can greatly influence our moods by what we eat. I know that although I love chocolate cake to a ridiculous degree, I feel sluggish and become obsessed with wanting more and more… and more.

Conversely what happens, when we eat the foods that support how we want to feel, is that our bodies respond accordingly. When you provide your brain with whole, natural foods, including fat (!), our bodies respond with more energy. With more energy comes more activity. With more activity comes clearer thinking. With clearer thinking comes better decisions overall, including which foods will truly nourish our entire beings: body, mind and spirit.

Let’s stop obsessing about weight. Let’s stop obsessing about six pack abs. Instead, let’s start providing our bodies and brains with the food to fuel our lives.
