L’Chaim For My Daughter

To life, to life” the old Fiddler song says.
Scholem Aleichem channeled through Sheldon Harnick! Who knew?
I love those old Jewish guys and I miss them, so much

Because if there’s anything I need now, it’s to raise a glass together
Though a toast seems entirely out of place
Between COVID deaths and climate change, why shouldn’t we despair?
Because it’s spring, and I have a daughter
She is gorgeous, smart and funny.  (Yes I’m kvelling…)

Life has a way of confusing us
Blessing and bruising us
Boy he got that right –
Drink L’Chaim, to life!

God would like us to be joyful even when our hearts lie panting on the floor
That’s where they are
How much more should we be joyful when there’s really something to be joyful for?
Good question let’s pause…

The times we’re in are both at once, aren’t they?
The worst, and maybe the best.

For Sheldon is alive, can you believe it? At almost a hundred, this guy!
And he’s writing about evil dragons
How the worst ones are in our hearts
But he says we can slay them
And even sing and dance while we do

I’ll drink to that, and to Sheldon
And to you, my Tzeitel, my dear
And if our good fortune never comes
Here’s to whatever comes –
Drink L’Chaim, to life!
