Kind words

photo by Jenny Ingalls Nelson, taken at her family’s camp in Central Maine

The lovely Jenny not only took today’s photo, but she chose the quote to go along with it. Clearly, she gets me and what I’m trying to bring to Monday Motivators, because it’s perfect.

Kind words can have endless echoes. I have seen evidence of this, I have experienced this personally, and I have heard numerous accounts that small kind words can be much bigger that we ever know.

Allow me to share an example.

I was recently having a conversation with someone who is known for being very vocal about her opinions. She mentioned that she “almost” said something, but that she stopped herself, and I exploded with praise, and high-five’d her! I was genuinely proud of this behavioral change, but essentially forgot about the whole interaction a few minutes later.

Fast forward a few days, and I was having a conversation with the same person. She told me how my words stuck with her, and how they made her consider previous times that her comments had possibly been inappropriate. She thanked me for my praise. The praise that I’d all but forgotten about had echoed in her mind.

I am now holding on to this example and trying to remember how kind words, even small, can echo for those who receive them. They can be short, they can be easy to speak and even easy to forget, but never underestimate their power.

I’d like to invite you to try out some short, easy kind words today. Let me know if they echo for you or someone else.

Thanks for being on the journey with me.

?, Lara
