It’s the way you carry it

I carry my loads in my neck and shoulders. I’ve woken up with my shoulders practically in my ears, when I’m at my most stressed. Sometimes I’m well aware of the load I’m carrying, sometimes only my body acknowledges it.

Everyone has stress. Everyone has things they carry. Not everyone carries those things in the same way.

There are people who shine in the face of adversity. I am not (yet) one of those people, but I am extremely aware of how I carry my loads and have learned that there are steps I can take to ensure they don’t break me.

When I take care of my body, when I rely on other and when I prioritize relaxation, I can carry life’s loads much more easily than when I try to ignore them, or ‘power through’.

…but if I just ignore it, won’t it go away?

I’m sorry, love, but not so much. When I ignore problems and stresses, they tend to come out sideways. You know the way – snapping at my husband for no reason, choosing ice cream for dinner, and, of course, that shoulders in the ears thing I mentioned earlier. Yeah, the mind is powerful, but stress is stored in the body, and the body remembers even when the mind tries to ignore.

Check in with your body in this moment. Is it calm? Is it wiggly? Is there pain? Is there tingling? Just notice it. Do the same when you’re happy and the same when you’re stressed. It’s pretty amazing what you’ll notice.

Listen to what your body has to say, even if your mind isn’t quite on board. Tuning in to the physical signs of stress can teach you when you need to lighten your load. Phone a friend, get a massage, or just take a walk. Learn what helps you carry the load, because it’s never the load that breaks you down and you can change the way you carry it.

Thanks for being on this journey with me.
