Guest Post by Diana Charabin for the Kind Kindred series.

The first time I saw a set of mala beads – I was captivated. [Editor’s note: Mala beads are sacred necklaces that have been worn for thousands of years in traditions of Buddhism, Hinduism and yoga – worn for japa meditation and peace] An unexplainable energetic love-at–first-sight feeling took over me. I could feel the power and peace radiating off this simple strand of 108 beads.
After reading more about mala beads I was even more intrigued. After first receiving a set from a yoga teacher I slipped it on my wrist and brought it everywhere – to yoga, in the car, in my purse – It was my “cool” accessory and my tool for prayer.
Now after creating mala beads for a living for nearly a year I simply gawk in awe with how our mala beads create: kindness, community and peace.
Mala beads are a symbol – for hope, love, spirituality, positivity and gentleness. What is so interesting to me is the relationship that the wearer has with those who interact with them.
I have heard countless stories of people being brought together with mala beads – strangers approaching others in grocery stores or yoga retreats either enquiring into what these unidentifiable beads are or alternatively getting excited and sharing their own personal stories with mala beads. These powerful meditative tools have sparked spontaneous friendships and the feeling of community across the world.
I believe that wearing mala beads is an announcement – to both yourself and the world.
To yourself – you vow to be peaceful, to love yourself, to be gentle to yourself and acknowledge that you are on a journey and are unfolding – but that you are dedicated to this unravelling.
To the world – I think we are announcing that we are here for peace and that we are here to work and to help change the world. We care. We love and we are dedicated to bringing light, love and inspiration with every breath we breathe.
