I am still learning

I am still learning, and I always want to be.

Although I am a voracious reader, learning goes way beyond books. I want to learn about people and places and experiences. I want to be more curious and less judgmental.  I want to be comfortable with the uncomfortable.

A recent experience reminded me to keep learning. I met a new person, and formed an instant opinion, as we all do. I didn’t think we’d connect, didn’t think we’d have anything in common or have good conversation. I’ve learned, though, that my first impressions are often incorrect judgments, so I kept talking…and found several wonderful connections and many commonalities.

Thinking I no longer need to learn is dangerous territory. It means shutting down and a closing mind, and that is not a space in which I want to live. It means not learning about myself, staying stagnant, not growing.

Consider yourself 10 years ago. For me, that’s when I really made a conscious choice to learn more, to grow and to stop being stagnant. So much has opened up since then, and it’s exciting to think about the next 10 years.

Keep learning, keep opening, and every once in a while, take a moment to recognize how far you’ve come.
