Holi-days!

‘Tis the Season! Here we are again, embarking on this season where we are magically able to have unlimited food, money and love for our families and friends for months on end. Ahh, if only! Here’s my realistic, non bah-humbugish perspective.

First, let’s keep it real and know that it really is only a few “days.” We are not required by the big jolly man in the red suit in the sky to eat our faces off for 2 months. Nor are we required to sing Christmas Carols every day (not that there’s anything wrong with that!). Let’s keep our eating in perspective. Here are my “eat everything” days:

~ Thanksgiving – well, hello mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie!
~ Christmas Eve – my own “Feast of the Seven Fishes” which includes lobster mashed potatoes and Pepperidge Farms Goldfish!
~ Christmas – magical potato filling, a family recipe combining mashed potatoes and bread stuffing!

So, besides stuffing myself for 3 days with every potato known to man, the rest of the time, I stick to the norms. For parties, I eat before I go and try to bring some sort of veggie platter if that’s appropriate. Generally I stick to one glass of wine and club soda after that. Common-sense stuff, not magical, and I still get to REALLY enjoy myself during those special days.

Oh, and let’s talk about our families during this time. I don’t know about you, but my family doesn’t suddenly turn into my every fantasy of joy and light. Actually, there’s a boatload of love and fun that happens by osmosis. But along with that, there’s some entitlement and boundary issues going on, just like every other day, go figure. So, instead of putting their every want and imagined need on credit cards (been there, done that!), I do what I am able to do and am comfortable doing.

Overall, remember, it’s all about our “presence,” not “presents.” Stay grounded and allow yourself to enjoy your food, festivities and family, all mindfully and with great love.
