Go Easy On Yourself

A new study showed that most people give up on their resolutions by January 12th! January 12th! That’s less than 2 weeks into the year…which means there are over 50 other weeks left. Do you spend them beating yourself up for not sticking to your resolutions or do you give yourself some grace?

Late last year I spent a little time in that place of beating myself up. I felt like I didn’t accomplish what I thought I would in 2018. I was feeling discouraged, and overall pretty disappointed.

So I questioned that thought. Was it really true that I didn’t accomplish much? Not at all! What was true was that what I accomplished didn’t look like what I thought it would at the start of the year. In 2018 I published Practical Kindness, launched the Doing (good) Business podcast and made connections that are leading to bigger things in 2019.

Sure, I didn’t speak as much as I thought I would last year; but sometimes the best things are the ones we don’t see coming. I like to think I can control everything…maybe you can relate! The truth is, while it’s important to have a plan and I always encourage goals, it’s equally (if not more) important to stay open to what comes. When I met my podcast co-host Kelly, the connection was instant. A little voice told me to ask her about a podcast and the rest is history. Had I not listened to that voice, or stayed rigidly aligned to my goal of speaking more, the podcast wouldn’t exist; and that would be a real shame because it’s one of my favorite things to do these days.

As we start a new year and you’re right in the middle of resolution season, remember to go easy on yourself. Stay soft, stay flexible, stay open. Consider things that support the spirit of your goals even if the package looks different than you might expect. You never know what might come when you go easy on yourself.
