Whether someone has graced you with their presence during a special event or they have gifted you with something, it is normal to feel grateful. You want them to feel that you appreciate what they have done for you. Wanting to show gratitude is one thing and doing it is another. The latter is usually not easy, especially when you think words may not be enough. How can you express gratitude to others?
Say It
The simplest way to express gratitude is to tell the person that you appreciate their efforts and sacrifice. Simple words like ‘Thank you’ and ‘I appreciate you’ will go a long way in making someone feel appreciated. Do not just assume that they know you are grateful. Saying it in words informs them of your gratitude and encourages them to do similar acts in the future. It is okay to just say “Thank you,” but taking time to explain why a person’s actions have touched you is even better. For instance, you could tell friends who have organized a surprise birthday party for you: “You made my day. I have never been happier on a birthday.” You can express your gratitude with a written note, a text message or a phone call. Better yet, say the words in person.
Gift Them
Gifts are given during special occasions but can also be used as a sign of appreciation. Get the person an appropriate gift as a show of your gratitude. Which gift should you give? This will depend on the recipient. You know them and what they like. Find a suitable gift and send it with a note. Some common gift items for friends are meal cards, flower bouquets, electronic gadgets and books. When selecting a gift, choose one that the recipient will love. For instance, gifts for a mom, stepmom or mother figure may include jewelry, personalized gifts and planned trips. On the other hand, a dad, stepdad or father figure may appreciate new golfing equipment, wallets or watches.
Spend Time Together
No matter how busy you are, find time to spend with people who value you. This is a great way to make a person feel appreciated. This could be done over a meal in your home, the other person’s house or at a restaurant. If you can afford it, you could book a trip to their favorite destination. The aim of this is to enjoy each other’s company and let that person know how grateful you are to have them in your life.
Help in Running Errands
The person you are appreciating has dedicated their time to come by and spend it with you. Running errands for them is a good way to show you appreciate their efforts. After all, there is something else they could have done with their time, but they chose to come and spend it with you. Ask if they need help with buying groceries, babysitting or any household chores. Help in any way you can and they will, in tun, be grateful to you.
Reciprocate the Kind Act
If someone was there for you when you needed them, you can also be there for them when they need you. Do not say “Thank you” but then refuse to support them when required. Be ready to offer the same level of support or more. Even when they do not need you, show up for their events or just hang out often. A person who supports you is a good friend. The only way to maintain a friendship is through frequent contact. Invite them to activities you both enjoy and have a good time together.
Make the Appreciation Public
While text messages and calls are great ways to make a person feel appreciated, public appreciation is much better. Post about their kindness on Instagram or other social media platforms. This way, everyone will know about the kind act this person performed. If it is a colleague who has shown exemplary performance in work, writing a LinkedIn recommendation will help their career advance.
Gratitude is only a feeling until it is expressed. Only by showing others how you feel will they know that you appreciate their efforts. By using any of these suggestions you can surely find a way to let people know that you are grateful for the things they do.
