Think of someone who you look up to. It can be a celebrity, someone in your life, someone from work or someone you witnessed in the world. I would choose Amy Poehler. Her book Yes, Please is really fantastic, plus she’s hysterically funny!

When you see Amy Poehler, you see an accomplished actress and comedienne. You may also know she’s close friends with Tina Fey, and if you’re a fan you probably know she’s also a wife and a mom. She seems to have it all: success, family, fortune, looks, character, etc. She would probably agree with you…and she’d tell you it took a lot of work.

I think Amy Poehler is hysterical. That’s what drew me to her, but it’s not what I admire about her. Sure, I’d love to have her quick wit, but what I really admire and what makes me look up to her, is that she’s very transparent about how she got to where she is today. She speaks openly about late nights in comedy clubs, terrible gigs and being judged on her appearance. She doesn’t pretend that it came easy, and she empowers women everywhere to follow their own dreams.

The way Amy Poehler owns her story is what I look up to. Brene Brown says, “You either walk into your story and own your truth, or you live outside your story, hustling for your worthiness.” Amy Poehler owns her truth.

Next time you find yourself looking up to someone or wishing your life was like theirs, consider what it took them to get there. You may not get a glimpse behind their curtains, but trust me, every butterfly we look up to fought like hell to get out of the cocoon.
