Do the thing that makes you happy

Whether you believe that Van Gogh cut off his own ear or not, it’s fair to say he led a tortured life.  Despite that, he managed to create some of the most beautiful art the world has ever seen.  He never saw fame in his lifetime, yet he continued to paint.  His art didn’t bring him much money or attention, but he still painted.

Painting brought him joy.  In a life that was riddled with everything from mental disease to physical disease, he managed to create close to 900 works of art.  He had to paint, and I’d venture to say it kept him alive.

Now, I’m no Van Gogh, but painting does make me happy.  I don’t do it often, but it’s always available to me and it always brings me joy.

We need those things.

In lives that are over-filled with meetings, events, lists, chores and tasks, we need the things that make us happy.

The things that make us happy are what fill us up.  Imagine a pitcher of water.  You pour 1 cup out for work, another for family, another for the household, another for commitments, etc.  Pretty soon the pitcher is empty, and that’s when you start snapping at people, overreacting to small situations, flipping people off in traffic and drinking way more coffee than any human should!

Take some time to fill it back up.  Do the thing that makes you happy.  Your energy level (and maybe some of the people around you!) will thank you.
