A Different kind of Christmas

Those people who know me, know that I LOVE Christmas. I love the idea of sitting down with loved ones and sharing a feast. I love the fact that we go give to charities during this time of year. But the biggest thing I love…the most important thing to me…is my family of four.

We have 23rd night together, 24th night together and 25th day and night together – or at least we did.

This year was very different. My oldest child is grown up and had to juggle two families for Christmas, ours and her boyfriend’s.

We worked right up until the 23rd with the band.

Lots of changes this year…and it was hard. I found myself choking back tears on a few occasions as the traditions that I had set changed.

I remember how hard my parents were on me. (I do love them though.) They expected me there on the 25th at all costs. When I got married this became difficult as I tried to juggle two families.

I guess the years of having my kids wake me up in the early hours of the morning have gone. Hubby and I found ourselves the first ones awake, not knowing what to do. The dog seemed excited though.

So, I made a promise to myself, that I would be fluid. I worked around Hayley and her commitments. I enjoyed the fact that Hubby and I were spending more time together. It was hard, really, really hard. The kids are growing up and I guess in many ways they are building lives for themselves, their own traditions and their own way of doing Christmas. This was what I had to come to terms with.

So, to all of you going through the same thing – make new traditions and know that life is constantly evolving, in a good way.  🙂
