Post by Heather Shafer for the Kind Kindred series.
Well hello again, beautiful souls!
Last week we talked about the power of self-talk. This week we are going to continue the process of detoxing our self-talk. We are going to start the process of tuning into that self-talk and really start to notice what we are saying to and about ourselves.
The key to being able to shift anything is to be aware that it’s happening, right? How can we change what we are not even aware of, what we don’t notice?
First off I want you to take a deep breath, I want you to remind yourself this is simply about noticing so you can start the process of shifting. This is NOT about beating yourself up. Be gentle, yet fierce with yourself and this process.
Ways to Start to notice what you are saying to and about yourself:
1) Start your day with a statement of awareness: I will lovingly observe my self-talk today. Repeat that a few times through the day ideally!
2) As you are observing, write some words, phrases or dialogs down that are coming up for you (or ones that came up) throughout your day. When possible, doing this as you go along in your day is ideal! However if capturing it at the end of the day is way better for you, then go for it! Look for key words/themes like: Can’t, won’t, not enough, stupid or any other negative, dis-empowering words.
3) Notice how you feel in your body when you are saying these things to and about yourself. If you have trouble noticing in the moment then try this when you reflect on what you have captured throughout your day. Do you feel tightness/tension anywhere? What about your breath, are you holding it? Do you have your shoulders up around your ears?
Self-talk also isn’t always as “obvious” as the phrases I mention. It comes in many forms, including what I refer to as “Declaring defeat before you even start.” I see so many people do this, including myself! Maybe it’s an idea or a dream you have and you think “nah- that’s just crazy.” That is all dis-empowering self-talk. We tell ourselves we are “just being realistic” but when we put ourselves down or shut down our dreams (and we do so most often unconsciously) then we totally shut ourselves off to possibility and openness.
Next week we will be looking at switching up our self-talk, taking the negative and dis-empowering statement and turning it into more empowering statements.
Here is to living Inspired, Creative and Empowered
