cellos are magical

Cast Into The Sky by Gordon Withers

The first time I listened to Gordon Withers’ music was after I heard that he had recorded several Jawbox songs on the cello, an album titled Jawbox on Cello: A Benefit For Cal Robbins, with the proceeds going to benefit the Cal Robbins Care Fund. (Cal is the son of Jawbox singer J Robbins.)

I had no idea who Jawbox was, but being a sucker for cellos, I listened, & then I learned about Callum, a little boy who was born with a genetic motor neuron disease called Type 1 SMA, or Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Kids born with this usually die before their second birthday. The disease affects the brain’s ability to communicate with the voluntary muscles that are used for activities such as crawling, walking, head and neck control, breathing and swallowing. Today, Callum is almost four years old.

What I also learned is that Gordon is not only an amazing musician, talented & passionate, (the music he draws from his cello is incredible!), but that he’s one of the nicest people I’ve ever had the pleasure & honor of knowing. I think the world of Gordon.

Wellllll, Gordon’s got a new album coming out & he needs our help! Produced by J Robbins and accompanied on drums by his brother Stephen Withers, this self-titled album of six original songs & five covers will only be released as a cd or on vinyl if he raises $2,500. He’s over halfway there now, which is so awesome & really shows the support of the DIY & indie communities. The song at the top of this post is actually from the new album, i love-love-love it!

You can pre-order a copy of Gordon’s self-titled album by clicking here. You can pledge anything from $1 on up, but $8 would snag you a copy of the cd. If he doesn’t raise the funds needed to master, produce & release the album, then no pledges go through.

But we want them to go through, good luck, Mr. Withers!
