Excerpt: Why Most People Struggle to Find Their Passion
“No one thinks my art is good enough,” Patty thought to herself.
She watched as another group of people passed by her paintings.
No one looked.
No one cared.
This art show was like all the others. Another nail in the coffin of her dreams.
All Patty has ever wanted was for someone to fall in love with one of her drawings.
But, all she has received is rejection.
This would be her last art show. In fact, Patty is thinking about hanging up her art altogether. The feeling of failure is too heavy on her.
You might not paint happy little trees on a canvas, but I would wager you know what Patty is feeling.
That’s because we all have passions that have failed. We all have tried something new, something we love, and met rejection.
And it hurts.
Over and over again as we grow through childhood into adulthood, we meet failure. And that sting never becomes comfortable.
In a nutshell, this is exactly why we struggle to find our passion.
As we encounter these failures, we train ourselves to accept them.
We trade our passions for security.
Here’s the thing: no real innovation comes from staying in our comfort zones.
Our passions lie on the other side of our security wall. We are afraid to open ourselves up to criticism and failure to pursue what we are passionate about.
And that fear comes from within.
I opened this article with Patty’s thoughts: “No one thinks my art is good enough.”
No one is telling this to her. That comes from herself.
This is called self-talk and we all do it. It’s a constant narrative that shapes our emotions, outlook, and attitude.
Honing in on our self-talk is part of the picture of becoming healthy.
This internal voice has a lot to say when it comes to pursuing our passions. If we want to break through the wall of insecurities we need to address our self-talk first and foremost.
To free ourselves from only staying in our comfort zones we need to create more positive self-talk. Instead of letting the negative self-talk win like, “No one thinks my art is good enough,” we need to concentrate on the positive.
Try these three statements when the negativity puts you on the wrong side of your insecurity wall:
- “Nobody is perfect. Even experts and professionals make mistakes. You are learning. Keep going.”
- “What I’m proud of myself today is…”
- “I can’t choose what happens to me, but I can choose how I respond to it.”
This is just a glimpse at self-talk. And self-talk is only part of the puzzle of becoming whole.
Your wholeness affects everything you do.
Your passions.
Your careers.
Your relationships.
The path for the positive to out-weigh the negative involves more than just tuning into your self-talk.
