5 Tips to De-stress during the Holidays

Raise your hand if the holiday overwhelm has officially set in.

Everyone I speak to seems to be feeling the same way: over-scheduled, over-stuffed and over-stimulated. We’re all on overdrive, and although our schedules are filled with joyous events, there sure are a lot of them.

There is a better way to feel. You can enjoy this time of year!

Here are my 5 top tips to de-stress during the holidays:

1) Unplug. Even if it’s just for 5 minutes per day, find some quiet time away from the malls, away from the internet and away from the frenzy. Take a bath, take a walk, write in a journal or just sit and breathe. This small act makes a huge impact.

2) Smile. Research shows that if you smile, even if you’re forcing it, your brain releases stress-lowering, mood-lifting hormones! So, go ahead and force that smile. Your mood will thank you!

3) Get a hug.  Did you know that a 10 second hug lowers blood pressure?  A 20 second hug does even more, so grab a friend or loved one and hug it out!

4) Do something for someone else.  Doing something kind for someone else doesn’t have to be another item on your overflowing to-do list.  Many large grocery stores have very easy and inexpensive ways to make a food donation to families in need.  Many shopping malls and stores are collecting Toys for Tots.  When you’re out and about, there’s bound to be an easy way to do something kind.  It’ll help someone in need and make you feel good at the same time!

5) Go outside.  Early last week, it was gray and rainy outside, and my mood reflected it.  In the Winter months, most of us don’t get enough Vitamin D and fresh air.  Take advantage of the sunny days and go outside for 10 minutes.  The fresh air and sun are instant mood boosters!

In as little as 10 seconds, you can shift your mood.  Make the choice this holiday season to combat overwhelm and enjoy the holiday activities.
