During this month of love, let’s not forget about ourselves! I know, I know…it’s so hard sometimes to make that time; but it’s so important. Let’s brainstorm about some easy ways to bring us back to ourselves, even if just a little bit. Below are some of my favorites and I would love to hear yours as well!
I’m not one for “normal self-care” things like jumping into a romantic bath with bubbles and candles. I don’t have time for that, I hate that the bathwater always gets cold just as I’m starting to enjoy it and I have to clean the tub before and after. No thank you! So, let’s get into the easier, more practical ways.
Grabbing a morning shower with some eucalyptus Epson salts as an exfoliator definitely starts my day off powerfully and invigorates me, no matter how cozy my bed seemed! Following it up with some soothing lotion takes about a minute but reminds me that I’m worth doing the little things that just make me feel better in my own skin.
I previously used my commute as my “in-between” time. I used it either to mentally prepare for the day or to shake off my day. Sometimes I used it to shake off whatever was bothering me personally so that I could give my all at work. Since I’m home most of the time now, I fell into the pattern of waking up, getting ready (aka drinking coffee) and jumping into work by 6:30 a.m. Fortunately, I have a standing phone date before I start my work day and I give myself permission to do little “transitions” after work (like a game of Words with Friends) before I jump into the next thing I have to do. I use anything that breaks the thought pattern, especially from work “to-do” lists that never seem to get completed.
I also started to use my lunch-time to read at least a chapter of a book that interests me, but bonus points if it’s frivolous or a novel. Even one chapter gets me out of my head and makes me feel like I’ve gotten away.
I am also a big believer in diffusing oils to change my mood. Anything citrusy or minty makes me sharper during the day and lavender helps me wind down at night.
Of course, a walk around the block also makes a huge difference, but the weather can be crazy, I know! On the days where all the stars align and the weather cooperates, a walk at any point during the day will put you in the space of connection, whether with yourself, a loved one or your doggeroo!
I hope this sparks the idea that self-love and self-care can be things that make your life easier and help your thoughts flow better. I would love to hear your ideas as well so I can add them to my day!
