Middle-Aged White Woman – VOTE!

Yes, this is directed to you personally because your vote is needed more than ever! I’ve never had a strong political tie to one party or another and I’ve voted for both parties in different elections, lackadaisically at best. For the first time ever, I am actively watching the news and seeking out both sides to fully understand so that I can have a valid opinion. Every day I am sickened to think that this is what our country has come to. I have uttered the phrase “F*ck _____” so many times that I can’t count. So why am I saying this on a site about kindness?

Primarily because there are two things that are true about anger. One is that it is a secondary emotion and it is covering up a primary emotion that, for some reason, we just can’t access at the moment. The other is that anger is a fuel to action. My anger comes at the current levels of systemic racism, the steps backwards that our LGBTQ community is being forced to take and the reversal of women’s rights that are already taking place. My anger is also directed towards me because I never saw any prior issues in my own thought patterns. It’s been tough to realize that I have been under the impression my entire life that I have an all-encompassing love for all the humans and then to realize that – hold up – there are definitely some issues in my thinking and actions as well. It’s a little like the “not my kid” mentality but well, so much worse.

My anger isn’t that somebody is attacking me or anybody else directly. My anger is that the verbal and physical attacks, along with the hatred, are directed towards entire groups and I have felt that my power to change it is limited. I am one person, I am not being persecuted, I am not an activist, I am not a strong speaker, I do not have a large platform. The world sees a middle-aged white woman with close to zero prior knowledge on all the current political issues with nothing of substance to contribute. Guess what? F*ck that!

Ironically, my anger is about the lack of kindness that is being slung around like, well, you know (this article already has too much cursing in it!). I am re-framing my perspective and I’m calling on you to do the same.

I am a Midage (and if Target can be pronounced Tarjay, I can damn straight be a Midaj) Woman, I happen to be white, heterosexual and I vote. I will continually seek education and feedback from those who are not Midage, white or heterosexual. I have definitely made my share of mistakes and I will surely make more in this process. Nonetheless, I care strongly about the following and will continue to rally in my own corner of the world for them (in alphabetical order):

  • End systemic racism
  • LGBTQ rights
  • Protect innocent children brought to this country
  • Women’s right to choose

I’m quite honestly not sure how to do this, but I’m done being powerless. I believe that with all of YOU, and by truly educating ourselves, we can stop the current cruelty through kindness.

I am extremely grateful to live in this country and to have the rights that we have. That being said, it is indeed time for America to be great – for the first time!
