The Turning

when gold tinges
tired green and
walnut trees toss
their leaves to
the first passing
breeze and honey-warm
goldenrod heads crest
above waves of
fading queen Anne’s
lace and cicada song
surges and recedes
on waves of
heat-swollen wet air
our earth-rhythmed
circadian bodies
know that it’s time
for the great preparing
of rustling autumn
for the dark homing
for the deep rest
of silent winter
