Could you imagine what it would be like if you didn’t judge yourself all the time? Can you imagine the freedom that you would feel and the mental energy that you would reclaim?
I can imagine both of those things. I’ve seen it in my own life and I watch my clients experience this kind of freedom on a regular basis (hashtag best job ever!).
Think about what it would feel like to not live from a place of should, but from a place of want. Consider the possibility of doing more things you love and fewer things you loathe.
Sounds great, right? Cool. So how do you get there?
First, let me be perfectly clear and tell you that with the possible exception of people like the Dalai Lama, none of us is ever 100% without judgment…and you can still feel awesome by moving closer to being judgment free.
Now, here’s what I know to be true about judgment:
1) When you judge others, there’s always something about yourself that’s behind it. I know. I liked to believe this wasn’t true for a long time and there are still times when I try to think it’s not true. It’s always true. Hard to figure out sometimes, but always true.
2) There is no rule that says you have to do what anyone says you should do. Your opinions are just as valid as anyone else’s. See what happens when you start making decisions from that place.
3) The better you take care of yourself, the less you care about what other’s think.
4) The stronger your boundaries, the less likely you are to assume you’re being judged by others.
Which one of those makes you the most uncomfortable? For me, I tend to vacillate between number 1 and number 3, so those are the places I start. Maybe for you it’s number 4 or number 2. Whichever one feels most edgy or you notice yourself not believing is the one to look at first.
Small steps away from judgement lead to big feelings of freedom.
