Secret Agents of Change

Join the mission – Operation Love!

I recently participated in a class in which we were encouraged to send money to people who had brought abundance to our lives. This was an exercise in being in the flow. It was also, obviously, a unique gratitude activity.

It worked like this: every day for 21 days we chose someone to send money to in appreciation for what they’d brought to our lives. It didn’t matter how much money, it was simply about being a conduit for giving.

I designed a small card that I sent to all my recipients. The card read, “I’m taking a class in which every day we send money to someone who has brought abundance into our lives. Today, I choose you! Thank you for all the gifts you have given me, knowingly or unknowingly. I appreciate you. May this small token be a reminder that abundance can come unexpectedly, around any corner, at any time.”

I would enclose that pre-designed note, a small pop-open card that contained a secret inspirational quote once it was opened, a $5 bill and a handwritten card expressing specifically what kind of abundance I had received from this particular person. I’d affix a “LOVE” stamp and send it off via the old-fashioned postal mail.

I always sent my money off first thing in the morning. It was such an energizing way to begin my day! I didn’t “think” about who I would send the money to each day. I simply let Life drop in the name of someone.

One day, the name that dropped in was a poet, Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer. Rosemerry is someone whose work I have followed (and admired) for a long time. I had just reached out to her recently after watching her TED talk and being so moved by it. We had a lovely exchange and I signed up for her “poem a day” email.

When she dropped into my mind that morning I remember thinking, “Oh, no! I can’t send $5 to a famous poet like Rosemerry! What will she think? How goofy is that?” But because I have a practice of always listening to guidance from Life, I swallowed all that vulnerability and simply sent off my card to her.

You know what happened? Magic happened.

One day I awoke to find that Rosemary’s poem of the day was something called “Secret Agents” and it was dedicated to me. That poem celebrated the power of small acts of kindness and appreciation.

Rosemerry posted her poem on Facebook, along with a photo of my card. People loved her poem and the idea of “Secret Agents of Change.” Rosemerry’s followers started sharing stories of how they were going to send money and gratitude to people. It was so uplifting to see all the posts that said, “I want to be a secret agent!” “I just sent a note and some money!” “I’m in!”

I was completely flabbergasted filled with joy. I felt so fortunate that I hadn’t let my small self or scared Squawky Polly mind talk me out of expressing my gratitude to Rosemerry. Look what happened? Not only did that joy come boomeranging right back to me in the form of a poem, but also people got inspired to follow suit.

More love was happening in the world because I followed an idea that Life gave me instead of giving in to the fear of looking stupid or feeling awkward!

But wait! That’s not all! Life whispered something else in my ear.

When I saw all those people saying they wanted to be Secret Agents of Change, the idea dropped in to contact Rosemerry to see if she wanted to do something “official.” We could create an event or challenge and invite everyone we knew to join in!

And because she is the kind of person she is – enthusiastic, joyful, willing and game – she said “Yes!”

Together we created “Secret Mission Challenge: Operation Love.”

And because this is Kind Over Matter, a place where we all come to celebrate kindness in all forms, we wanted to invite YOU to join us. You have the perfect heart to be an agent of change – we know you already ARE!

Here’s our invitation:

Join Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer and Sherry Richert Belul on a delightful journey bringing secret joy through simple daily activities. Each day, for seven days, Sherry will post one of Rosemerry’s amazing poems. That poem will contain a prompt for the day. Don’t worry, you won’t have to decipher any hidden messages in it! We’ll tell you what it is! You’re given 24 hours to fulfill your mission and report back. This challenge takes place in a secret Facebook group. (See the link in my bio below!)

Our official challenge will start on “Random Acts of Kindness Day” which is February 17th. Here’s to all the acts of kindness, secret and not-so-secret – the world needs ‘em all!

Oh, and…please enjoy the poem Rosemerry dedicated to me:

Secret Agents
by Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer
(for Sherry Richert Belul)

With a LOVE stamp, the woman I’ve never met
mailed me five dollars, “to be a reminder
that abundance can come unexpectedly,”

she wrote, and sitting with her letter in my lap,
I thought of last night’s snow –
five white inches that fell after midnight

and softened the whole hard world.
And I thought of the orchid on my mantle
that sprouted a new stem of purple buds

even as the other stem continued to bloom.
And I thought of my office mate bringing in
nine tins of exotic teas to share. And my daughter

sending me a text to say she loved me “soooo much.”
And I thought of a woman in a town a thousand
miles away, a woman I have never met,

who thought, “I think I’ll send five dollars
to someone who brought abundance into my life.”
How simple it is to manifest unforeseen joy.

How clear the invitation to extend gratitude,
to spread good will, to remind each other
how the world will offer itself, will open

and open and open, how we, ourselves,
are the agents of the world.
