Believing

She took a long look in the mirror
and instantly began the process of bargaining.

She wasn’t sturdy in her stance
and her self-esteem was gone ever since the bluegrass upbringing she endured.

Longing for some understanding
of self and of her appearance,
she just wanted to be heard.

And one day everything just clicked.

She didn’t need others’ assurances.

All that mattered was that she accept herself –
for all that she is, all that she looks like
and for where she stood in life.

And once this was realized,
she suddenly felt more confident and more loved.

She was pretty great,
and she finally believed it.
