Cheers. Salute. Prost. Mabuhay! Chinchín!
When’s the last time you paused to raise a glass and say a few words to appreciate, acknowledge or celebrate someone?
Sure, I know we all do this at big events – weddings, graduations, milestone birthdays. But the simple act of toasting someone can be a gift anytime, anywhere.
When you are having dinner with your beloved, pause to raise a glass and verbally appreciate him/her for something. It could be “Honey, I raise my glass to you for your patience this morning when I was crabby. You are the best.”
When you’re at lunch with your mom on Thursday, hold up your coffee cup and say, “Mom, I raise my glass to you for all these years of being the gosh-darned best mom you could possibly be to me.”
When you’re with your children on the beach, raise up your plastic tumbler and thank them for bringing so much joy to your life.
Heck, try it with a stranger, too! Next time you go out to dinner and the waitress takes great care of you and makes you laugh, surprise her when she comes to bring the bill and have everyone at the table raise a glass to thank her.
Most people are alike in that we love to be appreciated. It’s energizing and enlivening to feel seen and loved, isn’t it? Toasting someone is such a simple way to offer that recognition and to create a small magical moment for someone.
Want to go the extra mile with this one? Next time you’re going to visit someone, pack up a pretty package of champagne or sparkling juice, some beautiful glasses and lovely linens. Break it out when you get there and create a moment of pure appreciation and joy with your surprise toast.
Try it tonight, or sometime in the coming week! (I double-dog dare you!)
Here are a few things to remember:
- There are no rules! I’m giving you permission to drop the formalities and make toasting your own thing. You can use a plastic glass, you can toast with water, you can sit down when you toast! If the toasting powers-that-be have a problem with this, send ‘em to me. I’ll deal with them.
- Focus on the heart of the toast.` This is about creating a magical moment of love and appreciation for someone. As long as you keep that the focus, you can’t go wrong. Don’t worry about the words you say, just feel the love and everything will be okay.
- Toasting is a way to put a frame around something. It pauses the rush and tumble of everyday life and creates space to breathe, recognize and celebrate. Don’t rush it. Linger in the moment. People need more of this in-between time in our lives.
- Life is not made up of all those big occasions that typically call for a toast. Life is made up of singular moments and we get to choose to live any and all of them with as much oomph as we want. If you want to toast your sister at the end of the day for helping you get your three kids bathed and into bed, then do it! There’s no such thing as a moment undeserving of celebration.
There are plenty of “big” moments in life for toasts – but it is so key to remember that we can choose to make any moment a big moment.
It’s free, it’s quick and it will mean a whole lot to the person on the other end of that raised glass!
If you try this, I hope you’ll comment or email me and let me know!
