Life Lessons

My daughter had a great idea for my next Kind Over Matter post. In fact, I am really blown away by what she did. She is in her last year of school and asked her friends to list 17 life lessons which coincided with the 17 years they have been on this earth.

Here’s my list of 47 life lessons. How many of them are relevant for you?  🙂

47 – Always stop and catch your breathe
46 – Never apologize for being who you are
45 – Learn to say “I’m sorry” – it is life changing
44 – Believe in the good in people
43 – One amazing friend is better than a whole group of not so amazing ones
42 – Never settle for second best
41 – Find someone who loves you for you
40 – Making a marriage work needs both people to do it
39 – Raising kids is hard
38 – Never ever tell me I cannot do something because I will find a way to do it
37 – Friends can be family
36 – Money isn’t everything
35 – Only you can make you happy
34 – It’s OK for people to not be in your life
33 – Sometimes you need to take your shoes off and walk in the grass
32 – The beach is good for the soul
31 – Death is only a physical thing – you will always remember your loved ones
30 – Gardening really isn’t for me
29 – My mum was right
28 – I am a good mum
27 – It is always better to look at the things you are grateful for and concentrate on them
26 – Laughing is one of the best medicines
25 – Animals bring so much pleasure
24 – Learn from your mistakes
23 – It is better to run your own race – be in competition with you and no one else.
22 – I am not perfect and that is OK
21 – It is OK to have a messy home
20 – Believe it when people say “This too shall pass”
19 – Your kids actually do look up to you as a role model
18 – Never swear in the car when the kids are little – it comes back to haunt you at the most terrible moments
17 – Girls can be very, very cruel and this doesn’t end when you are older
16 – Things come with hard work
15 – You are never too old to rock and roll
14 – Dancing in the kitchen is the best way to bring the family together
13 – It is the simple experiences that kids remember
12 – People are always going to judge your physical appearance
11 – The bad boy is never the best boy
10 – My family is everything to me
9 – You can go on holidays with your best friend and not kill one another
8 – It is hard when your parents get old
7 – Standing up for what is right might not be easy but it is worth it
6 – Having a sick child is awful
5 – Mental illness is a disease and just as debilitating as a physical illness
4 – Home really is where the heart is
3 – I still need to be a kid sometimes
2 – It is OK to get old

And, my #1 life lesson is (insert drum roll):
I have done one hell of a job with my kids. Hayley inspiring me to do this showed me that.
