We all get knocked down in life. Things don’t go as planned, ideas fail, jobs don’t work out, bad things happen to good people.
I don’t say this to sound depressing; actually the opposite. Everyone, at some point, gets knocked down. This is a guarantee, and often something you can’t control…but you can always get up.
Getting up is where you have a choice, because you can totally stay down. It’s easier to stay down sometimes, and there have been plenty of times when I’ve chosen to stay down for longer than I should, but I eventually got up.
Getting up gives you some of your power back. When the inevitable happens and life knocks you down, getting up is how you show yourself that you can keep going. Each time you choose to get up, you’re cultivating resilience, like making a deposit in a bank. The more you get up, the more you deposit in your bank, the more resilient you become.
So, how do you do it? When you’re knocked down, face down in the ring as Brené Brown would say, how do you get up?
Start small. Look for 1 small thing you can accomplish. That guaranteed item you know you can check off your list. It might be as small as going grocery shopping or as big as scheduling a meeting to re-pitch the idea that failed the first time. It doesn’t matter what it is; only that it’s something you’re absolutely sure you can do.
Appreciate the accomplishment. Once you’ve accomplished your 1 thing, take a moment and reflect. Give yourself credit for doing it, and compliment yourself.
Share. Reach out to someone you trust. Tell them you’re in the process of getting up, and let them support you, cheer you on and lend a helping hand. So often we choose to go it alone, when our strength really lies in connection. <————CLICK to Tweet this!
Next time you get knocked down, remember you’re not alone. Remember that even when it feels most difficult, you can still choose to get up. Start small, appreciate your accomplishment, and always always always, share. Reach out to someone you trust. Start making deposits into your bank, and you’ll cultivate a habit of resilience that will serve you in all areas of life.
