Take time to do nothing

When was the last time you did nothing?  No multi-tasking, no running around, no to-do list…just nothing.

Time and time again, I learn the value of this.  When my mind is relaxed, ideas come.  Some of my best ideas have come during a massage or right before I fall asleep.

We are humans doing more than we are humans being.  We work, cook, clean, take care of our families, our communities and our friends.  Many of us identify as the one who gets things done.  After all, if you don’t do it, who will?

Sound familiar?

How does that feel?  Sure, the ego benefits from reciting the list of accomplishments we fit into every day, but how does your spirit feel?  What about your body?  Have you lost sight of anything that’s not on a to do list?

Give yourself 5 minutes.  No big commitments required, just take 5 extra minutes in the shower, or take 5 minutes to sneak away from the house, job or meeting, and breathe.  Let your shoulders come down, roll your neck around and breathe.  Feel your jaw un-clench and your muscles relax.

Try this for a week and see what happens to your mood, attitude and perspective.  You deserve these 5 minutes and so much more.
